A few months ago I wrote about the importance of tracking metrics as young companies scale up. Turning founder hunches into actionable measurements is key to making the right choices when investing for growth. But metrics can be easily abused and as investors we see a lot of stats (especially in investor pitches) that are useless or, worse, misleading.
For those of you who want to perfect the art of misleading with metrics, read Scott Maxwell's recent post. My favourite obfuscation techniques? Numbers 8 (keep the best metrics in your pocket and mention them "off the cuff"), and 9 (defer to your functional heads for detail on the key metrics -- very impressive).... ;-). Nice one, Scott.
